Common Equity Housing SA Ltd (Common Equity), is a registered Tier 2 community housing provider.

Mission

To lead, serve and inspire our members to grow cooperative housing and empower communities.

Cooperative housing is valued for its social impact and for providing secure, affordable and democratically run housing available to all.

Cooperatives are based on the values of self-help, self-responsibility, democracy, equality, equity, and solidarity.

Cooperative members believe in the ethical values of honesty, openness, social responsibility and caring for others.

Co-op advocacy

Common Equity actively promotes the value of co-operatives and the vital role the housing co-op models can play as part of the solution to the national affordable housing crisis. We advocate for all housing co-ops in South Australia, whether a member of Common Equity or not.


Common Equity Structure

Common Equity provides to member co-ops:

  • administrative, finance, asset and tenancy management services
  • regulatory compliance and risk management controls, monitoring and reporting
  • advocacy, education and participation strategies and skills

Common Equity

  • hold the title of properties
  • manages and grows the housing portfolio
  • oversees the management of the housing program including reporting and compliance
  • develops and provides resources to member co-ops to support their functions and to develop a Future Directions Plan

Housing co-ops (member organisations)

  • are independent entities, either incorporated under the Co-operatives Act or the Associations Act
  • members and shareholders of Common Equity
  • nominate and elect members to the Common Equity Board of Directors
  • plan for the housing needs of their members via a Future Directions Plan

Co-op members/tenants

  • are members of housing co-ops
  • participate in the governance and running of their co-op
  • fulfil their tenancy obligations

Direct tenants of Common Equity

  • are tenants of Common Equity
  • fulfil their tenancy obligations

Common Equity Housing SA acknowledges the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as traditional custodians of the land on which it operates. We pay respect to Elders past, present and emerging, and value the rich history, unbroken culture and ongoing connection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to country.
